PT Usha, the president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), has advocated strongly for the inclusion of Yoga in the Asian Games, emphasizing its significant physical and mental health benefits. In a compelling appeal addressed to Raja Randhir Singh, president of the Olympic Council of Asia, Usha highlighted Yoga’s growing popularity and its successful integration into major Indian sporting events.
“Yoga as a sport presents an enticing proposition for broadcasters,” Usha asserted in her communication. She pointed to its successful incorporation in events like the Khelo India Games and the National Games in Goa, where practices such as Mallakhambh and Yogasanas were warmly received. Expressing confidence in her proposal, she urged the Olympic Council of Asia to consider the inclusion of Yoga in future editions of the Asian Games.
Highlighting the global observance of the 10th International Day of Yoga on June 21, Usha noted the widespread embrace of Yoga across nations, underscoring its universal appeal and manifold benefits.
“As the birthplace and custodian of Yoga, India is uniquely positioned to spearhead efforts to include this discipline in major international sporting events,” Usha asserted. She emphasized that securing a place for Yoga in the Asian Games would pave the way for its eventual inclusion in the Olympic Games, reinforcing India’s role as a leader in promoting this ancient practice on a global stage.
Usha also drew attention to the recent initiative at the Louvre Museum in Paris, where visitors can participate in Yoga sessions ahead of the Olympics, suggesting a growing global recognition and acceptance of Yoga’s significance.
The IOA president highlighted the supportive stance of Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya, who endorsed the initiative to advocate for Yoga’s inclusion in the Asian Games as a pivotal step towards its broader international recognition.
“I firmly believe that integrating Yoga into the Asian Games would be a significant milestone in showcasing our indigenous sports on a prestigious global platform,” Usha concluded.
This concerted effort by PT Usha underscores India’s proactive stance in promoting Yoga as a recognized sport internationally, aiming to leverage its cultural heritage and health benefits on a broader athletic stage.
