Archana Makwana, a Vadodara-based fashion designer and lifestyle influencer, has appealed to the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) to retract the FIR filed against her following an incident where she performed yoga at the Golden Temple complex on June 21. Makwana expressed regret over unintentionally offending Sikh sentiments during the incident.
In a recent video statement, Makwana highlighted that she was unaware of the rules governing conduct within the Golden Temple premises and emphasized that her actions were not intended to disrespect the Sikh community. She lamented that the controversy escalated when her photographs were maliciously circulated outside India, triggering undue backlash against her. Makwana criticized the SGPC’s decision to file a FIR, describing it as unnecessary mental harassment and urged for its withdrawal. She also affirmed readiness to contest the case legally if required.
Responding to Makwana’s plea, a spokesperson for the SGPC criticized her continued behavior, alleging that despite her apologies, Makwana persisted in posting objectionable content on social media, potentially inciting others against visiting Gurdwara Sahib. The spokesperson refuted Makwana’s claim of unawareness regarding the rules, citing the presence of clear guidelines displayed at the entrance of the Golden Temple complex.
Following SGPC’s complaint, the Amritsar police registered an FIR under Section 295-A of the Indian Penal Code, which pertains to deliberate acts intended to hurt religious sentiments.
Meanwhile, the Vadodara Police lodged a separate FIR in response to death threats received by Makwana from unidentified individuals via email, WhatsApp, and Instagram. The FIR, categorized as sensitive, was registered under Section 507 of the IPC at the Karelibaug police station. Deputy Commissioner of Police Panna Momaya confirmed the nature of the threats, clarifying that no suspects have been identified thus far.
The controversy surrounding Makwana’s yoga performance at the Golden Temple continues to draw attention, prompting discussions on cultural sensitivity and the responsibilities of influencers on social media platforms.
