Peoria, Ill. (WMBD) — Enthusiastic yogis in Peoria combined their love for downward dog with kittens in need during the recent Kitty Yoga fundraiser hosted by the Peoria Humane Society. Held on Saturday, the event aimed to not only enhance participants’ physical and mental well-being through yoga but also raise awareness about pet adoption.
Participants engaged in a variety of yoga poses while surrounded by 11 playful kittens of varying ages and personalities. Many attendees couldn’t resist the allure of cuddling with these furry companions.
Kitty Yanko, Director of the Peoria Humane Society, highlighted the dual benefits of the event. “We’ve got 11 kittens all ranging in different ages and personalities. They’re running around, they’re interacting with people, and the hope is maybe they will get adopted today,” she remarked.
Yanko emphasized the importance of socializing the kittens during such events, noting that it increases their chances of finding a permanent home. “It’s also a way to just showcase the animals and let people know they are here. They need to be adopted, they need good homes,” she added.
The event also underscored broader issues surrounding pet care and adoption from shelters. “The end result is raising awareness about how to care for pets and, of course, adopt from an animal shelter when you can,” Yanko emphasized.
Currently, the Peoria County Animal Protection Services (PCAPS) is facing an overflow of cats and kittens, with recent rescues from a hoarding situation adding to their numbers. Yanko urged prospective pet owners to consider adoption over purchasing from breeders or pet stores.
The Kitty Yoga fundraiser not only promoted physical fitness and relaxation through yoga but also served as a poignant reminder of the ongoing need for responsible pet adoption practices within the community.
