Rebecca Wierks, blending her talents as a pianist accompanist with her role as a nurse practitioner, has discovered a distinctive vocation in “sound baths,” merging ancient traditions with modern medical insights on the therapeutic effects of sound waves.
Teaming up with yoga instructor Jasmine Jelsema, Wierks will host a complimentary session combining yoga and a sound bath at Tunnel Park, located at 66 N. Lakeshore Ave. The event is scheduled for Tuesday, August 6, from 10-11 a.m.
This event heralds the launch of Music Moves Us, a week-long series of ten free events taking place in Holland from August 6-10. The program features a diverse array of music and dance experiences, including salsa, hip hop, and big band dance lessons, culminating in the grand finale concert “Music Unites Us – Brazil!” by the Holland Symphony at Kollen Park on August 10.
Wierks, whose background includes a piano degree and a career as a nurse practitioner at Holland Hospital, views her certification in sound baths as a natural evolution, combining the therapeutic benefits of sound, music, and health. She recently founded Soundwave Health and now offers sound bath classes at Pilates in Holland.
“Sound therapy involves utilizing sound waves to positively impact our health,” explains Wierks, elaborating on its efficacy in managing pain, lowering blood pressure and heart rate, reducing cortisol levels, slowing brain wave activity, and promoting a serene mental state.
Bonding through Sound
Wierks and Jelsema forged their partnership through collaboration with Carrie Ledet, a music teacher at Macatawa Bay Middle School, where they introduced rejuvenating sound baths during teachers’ lunch breaks.
“We want people to discover the profound benefits of sound baths,” says Wierks. “Participants often feel deeply connected afterward because we’ve shared something powerful and meaningful together.”
Jelsema, also a Reiki healer, integrates sound baths into her yoga practice, underscoring her belief in the healing properties of energy and sound.
“I incorporate sound practices into all my sessions, whether it’s energy healing or yoga,” says Jelsema. “Sound is integral to the overall experience.”
Attendees are encouraged to bring a yoga mat or towel, wear comfortable attire, and consider bringing a journal for reflective writing during the session.
The event is supported by Women of Color Give, a philanthropic collective committed to community wellness initiatives.
