The Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY) recently held a special lecture focused on the integral relationship between Yoga and diet, featuring esteemed Vaidya Prof. Kamlesh Kumar Sharma. The lecture, attended by Dr. Kashinath Samagandi, Director of MDNIY, was well-received by an audience of Yoga practitioners and students.
Prof. Sharma, a distinguished scholar in Ayurvedic medicine and former professor at the National Institute of Ayurveda (NIA), Jaipur, emphasized the crucial role of diet in achieving Yoga’s benefits. Drawing from the Chandogya Upanishad, he remarked, “Anna is the visible Ishwara. It serves as fuel, but our perception of Anna is equally significant. Only when diet is balanced and its goals are met can one fully accomplish Yoga.”
The professor provided detailed guidance on dietary practices, including the optimal timing, content, and quantity of meals. He recommended a three-meal regimen: breakfast between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., an early evening meal, and dinner in the early hours of the night. Prof. Sharma stressed that a balanced diet is essential for enhancing Yoga’s effectiveness, as proper nutrition supports the body’s equilibrium and maximizes the benefits of Yoga asanas.
Dr. Kashinath Samagandi, in his address, underscored the importance of diet, referencing the Bhagavad Gita. He stated, “Diet, along with lifestyle and Yogic practices, is a fundamental aspect of survival. By adhering to principles of Achaar (conduct), Vichaar (thought), Ahaar (diet), and Vihar (lifestyle), one can achieve the goals of Yoga through practices such as Yogasanas, Pranayama, and Yoga Nidra.”
The lecture engaged attendees with practical advice and fostered a deeper understanding of the synergy between diet and Yoga. Participants praised the session for its insightful and actionable recommendations.
