LONGVIEW, Texas (KLTV) – Visitors to East Texas art museums typically enjoy a rich cultural experience, but the Longview Museum of Fine Art provides an additional benefit: the opportunity for exercise through yoga classes.
Held every Tuesday and Thursday at noon, the yoga sessions are a unique perk for museum members. Tiffany Jehorek, the museum’s curator and executive director, highlights the lighthearted atmosphere, noting, “We joke about doing the downward dog in the gallery, but you have the side gallery to work in.”
The idea for yoga classes in the serene museum setting began a few years ago, creating a space for what Jehorek describes as “moving meditation.” According to yoga instructor Grace Weaver, the sessions focus on more than just physical exercise. “It’s not just exercise; it’s about the mind, body, soul, and heart. Simple stretching and a little bit of movement, with no sweating. It’s definitely great exercise,” she explains.
The benefits of combining art and yoga extend beyond physical health. Jehorek references studies by the Texas Cultural Trust that suggest visiting an art museum or attending a symphony can reduce the risk of depression by 48 percent.
With the holiday season approaching—a time often associated with overeating and stress—these classes offer a timely opportunity to manage weight and promote relaxation. Weaver emphasizes the importance of deep breathing during the holidays, stating, “Deep breathing is going to give you more of a grounding aspect.”
Classes take place from noon to 1 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. They are free for museum members, while non-members can participate for a fee of $10 per class.
For those seeking a blend of culture and wellness, the Longview Museum of Fine Art presents a perfect escape this season.
