More than 250 people gathered on the grass at GMHBA Stadium last week for a sunrise yoga session, marking World Mental Health Day. The event, “Serenity in the Stadium,” was organized by Read the Play in collaboration with Active Geelong, Kardinia Park Stadium Trust, and major partner Plan Group. It aimed to highlight the connection between physical activity and improved mental health.
The yoga session, led by Sally Ferris from Wonder Yoga, was designed to accommodate all fitness levels. Ferris encouraged participants to focus on their well-being through movement and relaxation, fostering mindfulness during the early morning practice.
The event also featured additional activities, including a Mini Movers session for children organized by Leisure Networks, showcasing the broader community’s involvement.
Read the Play general manager Michelle Gerdtz expressed her satisfaction with the morning. “We wanted to create an event on World Mental Health Day that would connect our community through physical activity while raising awareness for mental health. Today, we saw that vision come to life in such a powerful way,” she said.
“The sunrise over GMHBA Stadium added a magical touch to the event, creating a beautiful backdrop for mindfulness and unity,” Gerdtz added. “Sally’s calm and nurturing presence helped guide participants through the yoga practice, fostering an atmosphere of peace and connection on the oval.”
Ms. Gerdtz also extended her gratitude to the Geelong community for their overwhelming support. “This event was a success because of the strong, unified commitment from local organizations, sponsors, and every participant who showed up to promote mental health and well-being in our region,” she said.
With contributions from community members and organizations alike, the event provided a meaningful and serene way to honor World Mental Health Day, underscoring the power of collective efforts in supporting mental health.
