The Embassy of India offers free yoga classes that are too good to pass up. In today’s economy, it’s essential to seize every opportunity for free activities, and these classes are a prime example. Many people talk about attending but often postpone, thinking, “I’ll go next time.” With two sessions available each weekday, there’s no excuse not to participate.
On a recent Tuesday afternoon, I mistakenly headed toward the Visa/Consulate entrance, only to be kindly redirected by three staff members to the building’s main entrance, complete with its beautiful staircase. Upon arrival, I was greeted with a friendly “first time?” and shown where to store my belongings, along with directions to the yoga hall where the session would begin shortly.
After grabbing one of the available mats, I joined a small group of five other participants for the evening class. As I settled in, I overheard the instructor chatting with a student, noting that many attendees were regulars.
I found myself in an intermediate class, which included Kriya, Asana, Pranayama, and meditation. It quickly became apparent that my coordination and familiarity with the movements were not on par with those of my classmates. Nonetheless, I was captivated by their dedication. The highlight of the class involved a series of movements synchronized with each inhale and exhale, led by the instructor’s steady rhythm and counting. A sign at the entrance read, “Keep Calm Maintain Silence,” creating a serene atmosphere where all I could hear was the sound of breathing and the teacher’s voice.
In a world where yoga is often viewed solely as a fitness trend, the instructor provided valuable insights into its holistic benefits. He discussed how yoga can regulate metabolism, reduce anxiety, connect the metaphysical with the physical, and promote controlled breathing. His thorough explanations added depth to the practice, enhancing our understanding of each pose and its benefits.
The class was challenging in the most rewarding way. Whenever I struggled with a pose, the instructor would gently assist me in achieving a deeper stretch, often surprising me with my own capabilities. I remarked to friends after the session that running a half-marathon this summer felt easier than that one-hour class. It’s exhilarating to think that with consistent practice, one could build the strength to participate regularly.
In a 2018 interview with Vísir, the former Indian Ambassador to Iceland expressed his concern over the high cost of yoga sessions at local studios, noting that the price of 3,000 ISK was prohibitively expensive. He believed yoga should be accessible to everyone, and this vision led to the establishment of free classes at the embassy. In a time when many fitness trends come with steep price tags, the embassy’s offerings are an invaluable resource.
I am already looking forward to returning—next time, I’ll opt for the beginner’s class.
