Under the auspices of Apollo Cancer Centers (ACCs), Apollo Athenia—India’s inaugural center dedicated to women’s health—hosted a Breast Cancer Awareness Yoga Event at Nehru Park, Yoga Sthal, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi. This initiative was part of the ACCs’ #TalkPink Campaign, aimed at highlighting the essential role of yoga in the fight against breast cancer.
The event drew over 800 attendees, including 250 cancer patients and more than 100 medical professionals. It provided a platform for survivors, doctors, and wellness advocates to discuss the importance of holistic healing in combating breast cancer. Alongside raising awareness, participants showcased how integrative wellness practices, particularly yoga, positively influence their lives.
The session was inaugurated by H. E. Freddy Svane, the Ambassador of Denmark to India, who served as the chief guest. “In Denmark, we recognize the importance of holistic health in cancer care, where yoga significantly enhances both physical and mental well-being,” he stated. “I am delighted to witness this breast cancer awareness initiative by Apollo Athenia for women’s health. The collaboration with Mr. Sourabh Bothra to create supportive spaces for those affected by breast cancer is inspiring. This gathering highlights our shared commitment to advancing integrative approaches in healthcare, fostering communities of healing and hope.”
A standout feature of the event was a Chair Yoga session, specifically designed for breast cancer patients and survivors, led by Sourabh Bothra, a renowned yoga expert. This session focused on gentle poses and breathing exercises aimed at aiding recovery, enhancing flexibility, and promoting emotional well-being.
Breast cancer remains the most prevalent cancer among women worldwide, accounting for 23% of all cases. Projections indicate that the global burden will exceed 2 million cases by 2030, particularly affecting developing countries. In India, rates are notably higher in the Northeast and major urban centers.
Dr. Geeta Kadayaprath, Senior Consultant in Breast Surgery at Apollo Cancer Center, New Delhi, emphasized the event’s significance: “Our goal today is to elevate the conversation surrounding breast cancer and the beneficial role of yoga in recovery. At Apollo Women’s Cancer Center, we are committed to providing exemplary medical care and compassionate support that addresses the whole person. This event celebrates strength, resilience, and community. Together, we can inspire hope, promote early detection, and advocate for holistic wellness practices in the healing journey.”
Participant Ritu Kapoor, currently undergoing chemotherapy following bilateral breast cancer surgery at Apollo Cancer Centers, shared her experience: “For me, yoga has been my anchor during these challenging times. It has provided me with strength, calmness, and hope. Participating in this event reassures me that I am not alone; healing transcends surgery and nurtures my body, mind, and spirit. I am grateful for this supportive community.”
